PROGRAM: Mining Paradox – The Push For Sustainability/Green Energy Necessitates Increased Mining
SPEAKER: Shawn Calendine, HydroGeophysics
PROGRAM DETAILS: The global green economy surge, marked by heightened commitments to sustainable energy to mitigate environmental harm, inherently demands more raw minerals essential for green technologies. This dynamic presents a paradox: the push for sustainability necessitates increased mining. This presentation delves into the public's contrasting perception of mining's carbon impacts versus mining's low carbon footprints and the carbon-neutral benefits of the green transition. At the same time, we discuss the carbon impacts of everyday activities and products people use regularly and their relationship to mining. Emphasizing public engagement and education, we discuss how to positively reshape perceptions about mining's essential role in the sustainable energy-driven green economy.
